Sullivan County District Attorney Meagan Galligan appointed Brian P. Conaty to the rank of Chief Assistant District Attorney today. Conaty, 30, is a lifelong Sullivan County resident and has been a member of the DA’s Office for several years, during which he has served as lead prosecutor in connection with serious prosecutions involving guns, drugs, assaults, sex abuse and driving while intoxicated. Galligan noted that Conaty has established himself as a talented and capable trial prosecutor with the insight and temperament to lead the County’s law enforcement community.

Galligan’s impending elevation to New York State Supreme Court Justice means that, on January 1, 2023, Conaty is expected to assume the role of Acting District Attorney, a position Galligan herself held when Sullivan County Court Judge Jim Farrell was elected to the bench. Conaty is a high honors graduate of Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center at Touro College, where he earned numerous accolades for outstanding achievement and advocacy, including in oral advocacy, evidence and other areas of practice. Since joining the DA’s Office, Conaty has advocated before Sullivan County’s local criminal courts and County Court, as well as before the New York State Supreme Court, Appellate Division, Third Department.

Galligan said, “I am proud to name Brian Conaty my Chief Assistant District Attorney. I am confident that he possesses the requisite integrity, character and independence to lead our law enforcement community and continue the strong partnerships with our Sheriff, local police Chiefs and State Police that have resulted in the successes that we have achieved together over the past several years. Brian is a prosecutor this County can depend upon and I trust him to make the right decisions, free from undue political or other influence. Congratulations, Brian.”

Conaty said, “I am proud to serve my hometown as a prosecutor and honored to be named Chief Assistant District Attorney. I know well the toll that criminal activity takes on innocent victims, their loved ones, and our neighborhoods, and I will continue to advocate for them through the criminal justice process. I am confident that, together with our partners in our law enforcement community, this Office will continue to hold those responsible for crimes accountable for their actions, to seek rehabilitation where appropriate and to do the right thing.”

Sullivan County Sheriff Mike Schiff said, “I am looking forward to working in partnership with Brian and I have complete confidence in his ability to carry out the duties of Chief Assistant District Attorney. I trust him to follow in Meagan Galligan’s footsteps, representing the citizens of Sullivan County in a fair, thorough and ethical manner.”
